SLOC Holds AGM



[From the SLOC PR Committee] The St Lucia Olympic Committee hosted its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 27th January 2009 at the Olympic Solidarity House at Barnard Hill
At the meeting which was well attended by most of the 17 National Federation member representatives, the President of the SLOC, Richard Peterkin, gave a comprehensive overview of the twelve month period January to December 2008 and also a peak preview into upcoming Programs, Plans, Sporting events and Funding
He highlighted the activities for 2008 which included the St Lucia visits of IOC President Jacque Rogge and PASO president Mario Vazquez Rana, St Lucia’s participation at the Beijing Olympic Games, and increased funding to sports programs
President Peterkin also highlighted the successes and disappointments for 2008 mentioning; the uneven and lower levels of participation by some affiliates of SLOC, lack of understanding on the setting of Games Standards and the overall performances of athletes at the international meets.
Among the highlights he applauded the IOC and PASO Presidents successful visits, the performance of the Executive Committee and the contribution of the individual members. He also singled for praise the roles of the Technical and Marketing committees
The interaction between th e SLOC and Government of St Lucia was emphasized alluding to the attendance of the Minister of Sport at the Beijing Olympics and at the PASO convention in Mexico and discussion on the Olympic Sports Administration Center in Castries. Also highlighted was the upcoming Caribbean Games in Trinidad and the contribution of SLOC General Secretary Alfred Emmanuel in that Games preparation
On Constitutional matters, he pointed out the SLOC will be having the Special General meeting to vote in the new SLOC Executive on 18th march 2009 and that the SLOC Constitution will be changed from and unincorporated entity to a non-profit company
High on the priorities will be the Olympic Sports Administration Center in Castries which is in the advanced stages of negotiation
The 2009-2013 Olympic Quadrennial also was highlighted indication all the upcoming events including CAC and Commonwealth games 2010, Caribbean Games 2009, and Olympic Youth Games in Singapore in 2010. The President also went into detail on all the various funding available leading up to these Games and the 2012 London Olympic Games

Other mention was made of the Olympic Congress to be held in Copenhagen from Oct 3-5th 2009 and finally the Treasurers report submitted for 2008. He also indicated the full report 2004-2008 would be submitted to independent auditors
The General Secretary also submitted an Activities report which highlighted happenings for 2008 including

· IOC and PASO Presidents visit to St Lucia. The Presidents meet with Heads of Government and State as well as the many sports administrators
· Organizing the final Sports Administrators’ course for members.
· Securing two scholarships for coaches, Faith Stanislaus of the Table Tennis Association and Victor Cornibert from the Athletics Association
· Ongoing educational activities with some cooperative school teachers which has seen the implementation of our educational programmes at certain schools.
· Mr. Patrick Mathurin successfully completed a five day Advanced Sports management programme in Switzerland
· Educational efforts also filtered down to technical personnel of some affiliates including the Volleyball, Basketball and Cycling Associations.
· Olympic Solidarity continued the funding of swimmer Danielle Beaubrun from January to August 2008
· To celebrate Earth Day, SLOC partnered with the Forestry Division and the Marigot Secondary School in a tree planting exercise.
· The SLOC was represented by women at two major conferences held during the period under review. Junia Emmanuel-Belizaire attended the IV World Conference on Women & Sports in Jordan, and Fortuna Belrose attended the VI World Forum on Sports, Culture and Education in Korea.
· Track & Field athlete Erma-Gene Evans was also awarded an eight month scholarship to assist her with her preparation for the Beijing Games.
· The SLOC continued with its assistance to many of our affiliates including Athletics, Boxing, Basketball, Cycling, Netball, Swimming, Sailing, Table-Tennis, Taekwondo, and Volleyball.
· Assistance to the National Council of and for Older Persons (Helpage) for the staging of their annual Senior Games.
· 2008 saw yet another edition of the Olympic Day Run. Last year’s event was combined with the launch of the Caribbean Games in St. Lucia
· The biennial Exhibition was held at the City Hall during the month of September.
· Congresses, General Assemblies & Meetings: 2008 saw SLOC represented at the following meetings: ANOC General Assembly, PASO General Assembly, Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly and the Chef de Mission meeting for the Caribbean Games.
· The SLOC made our website more visible and current. The SLOC also increased the amount of Information Technology equipment housed at the office.
Before closure of the meeting the accounts for the year were presented and accepted. The meeting was well received and attended by the National Federation representatives
